General Note
"Are they all saying the same thing? There are differences between all of the hands and the way that they are shaped. Is one of these more correct that then the other, how can you tell? We all speak in different ways. There are many languages in the world and not all of them use vocal cords. This is American Sign Language (ASL). It is used by deaf and non-verbal individuals in the United States, as well as many other people. These individuals have different skill levels and abilities that affect the way they use their hands, which affects the look of the sign. Here they are all saying the same thing, but because of the differences in their dexterity there are what appears to be eight different signs. As an artist, i try to represent people in their truest form. In these photographs I did not change anything about the appearance of the hands. In the photographing process I influenced the subjects as little as possible so that I could get the truest form of the way that they sign. This series shows how different people of different abilities express themselves, but in the end they are all saying the same thing."
