General Note
"My inspiration to my series, What She was Wearing, came about after I heard about a specific case that had been making headlines recently. Brock Turner was a student at Stanfod University who sexually assaulted a young women in January 2015. Turner did not recieve the proper sentencing most believe that he deserved. The main focus on Turner was that he was an outstanding swimmer (potentially the only thing he has a good reputation for at this point). Coming from an affluent family, Turner's dad goes tot he length of writing a letter to defend his son, claiming that Brock's "20 minutes of action" shouldn't impact his whole life. Brock Turner cries victim in this case, with no regards to the actual victim. Part of her letter really grabbed my attention. After hearing the issues ergarding the case, I felt that the victim was truly revictimized by Brock Turner and the authorities throughout the trial. As you can see from the blurb from the victim's letter, these questions she was asked were not comforting by any means, nor were half of them relevant tot he actual rape that took place. These is a certain stigma that when a woman is raped, it has to do with whre she was, what she was doing and what she was wearing. Society tries to blame victims. "Boys will be boys," "she must have lead him on" the excuses are endless. For her, and for others who feel that they recieve unjust sentences for their offenders, I wanted to portray how much these offenses really impact a person's life. Thousands of victim's lives are changed from one, preventable experience. It is important that we are educated on this and know how many people are actually affected. All the models in my series are victims of an offense, including sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking. All of these offenses are very common especially for the age groups of 18-24, even more common with females who are attending college or university."
